The BMA will ballot consultants in Northern Ireland on industrial action from next week, doctors’ leaders have announced.

People in mental health crisis are still being criminalised owing to NHS failures, says report

A “culture of blame shifting and unaccountability” in the NHS has led to the service continuing to use systems that criminalise people in distress during mental health crises, a report by the charity Medact has warned.

After pressure from the campaigning group the StopSIM Coalition, NHS England said in 2023 that service providers should stop using the Serenity Integrated Mentoring (SIM) system and similar practices that embed police forces in mental health systems to oversee patients who arrive at hospitals during mental health crises. NHS England said that police involvement in non-emergency mental healthcare, withholding care, and discriminatory attitudes towards patients who harm themselves should be “eradicated.”1

Europe is seeing "devastating" rise in health harms from extreme weather events, experts warn

The number of adverse impacts on health related to extreme weather and climate events is continuing to rise in Europe, an EU report1 has found.

The report from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said that vulnerable groups, the public, and some healthcare providers are underestimating the potential risks from extreme heat, a situation that experts said needs to change.

The report estimates that there were between 55 000 and 72 000 deaths because of heat waves in the summer of 2022, the most recent year for which data are available. It highlighted that in the past 20 years, heat related deaths have increased in 94% of European regions. In the period between 2000 and 2020, heat related mortality increased by around 30% in the World … ....

Losing NHS doctors early is costing £2.4bn a year, BMA estimates

Urgent action is needed to stem the exodus of doctors from the NHS, which is damaging patient care and costing taxpayers up to £2.4bn a year, the BMA has warned. With an estimated 15 000 to 23 000 doctors in England having left the NHS prematurely between September 2022 and September 2023, the cost of replacing them and their expertise would be between £1.6bn and £2.4bn, it said.
