Vanessa pappas told tiktok users in a video statement that its staff were building the safest app, amid us concerns about data protection. Tiktok is mostly used to share short videos, usually about 15 seconds long, and it has grown rapidly in the last year, now boasting more than 800 million active monthly users worldwide. But it is owned by a chinese company, bytedance, and it is this last fact that concerns the us security forces. There is in fact a precedent for this us announcement. India has already blocked the app, and australia is also considering a ban. Here is our Technology Reporter chris fox. Well, the app has been decompiled by security researchers. Theyve looked deep into it, and as yet, they havent found a smoking gun. Theres nothing obvious in the app that seems to be sending information back to the chinese.
