Mubarak is shortly to step down and transfer authority in a consensual coup to the higher council of the armed forces of egypt. this, i think, would represent, perhaps, the second tier, second most desirable scenario for the obama administration. all evidence recently had been that president obama and secretary of state clinton wanted to be in a position where president mubarak would finish out his term in september and that he would step down voluntarily. and that his son, gamal, would not run. all the briefings that with got was president obama wanted it to be the way it went down, that mubarak would not be treated like a criminal. he would finish out his term. secretary clinton herself pointed to the elections and told an interviewer, look what we have. ....
This parallels what happened in 1952 when the egyptian government the very same thing. the military took over the egyptian government in 1952, a group of army officers was led by the future second president nasser. they overthrough the monarchy. but they had an internal struggle between them just like we are looking at today. where you have certain factions of the military that want one outcome. others that are closely aligned with mubarak on the political side and they want another outcome. the key question is whether this reported military takeover will suffer those same internal disagreements and the entire military leadership appears to be in support of the action that s taking place right now. mitigates that rise to be some degree. but we cannot rule out the idea of this political infighting. one report you mentioned earlier ....
