Based in Bareilly, the HQ UB area is currently a static formation looking after peacetime locations and training establishments of Uttarakhand and western Uttar Pradesh, in addition to the LAC running along Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand also referred to as the central theatre.
Assam Rifles has 46 battalions and a sanctioned strength of more than 65,000 troops. Of these, 20 battalions are involved in guarding the India-Myanmar border and 26 battalions are involved in counter-insurgency roles, including two in Jammu and Kashmir.
Since 2020, Corps Commanders of India and China have been discussing resolution of the flashpoints along the LAC, including those which emerged after the standoff began.
The discussions, an official source said, are aimed at setting the stage for limited disengagement along the LAC on further orders, even as regular interactions between local military commanders on the ground will continue alongside other confidence-building measures.
There has been no definitive forward movement in the last few rounds of military talks on resolution of legacy issues or an overall de-escalation of troops in eastern Ladakh.
