Melbourne officials endorse panhandling crackdown, brainstorm homelessness solutions

Prevent, reduce, and mitigate the negative impacts of homelessness on citizens, businesses and city operations.
Support and build capacity within the city and community to address homelessness.
Support regulations that increase the safety of roadways and medians for pedestrians and motorists.
Encourage collaboration among city departments, non-profits, businesses and residents to address homelessness.
Retain and increase affordable housing supply.
The Parks and Recreation Department has had to make structural changes to facilities to reduce the locations where individuals can hide at night. They have also had to increase cleaning efforts at the parks, park facilities and restrooms,  City Manager Shannon Lewis said in a memo distributed prior to the meeting. ....

MELBOURNE, Fla. – A Melbourne police officer’s knee was “crushed” when he was dragged by a suspect’s vehicle and then nearly run over Sunday near a Walmart, an arrest affidavit said.
Charlie Taranto, 22, of Satellite Beach, was arrested on several charges, including attempted murder, leaving the scene of a crash, resisting arrest and using a firearm during a felony.
According to authorities, the officer, identified only as Officer Gould, discovered a suspicious vehicle behind the Walmart at 1001 E. Eau Gallie Boulevard and found Taranto slumped over in the driver’s seat. Gould tapped on the window of the Lexus, but Taranto initially did not respond, the affidavit stated. ....
