The Fairfield Public School District 112 Board of Education met last night and voted to employ Josh Kissen as Center Street Principal. Kissen currently teaches sixth grade math at Red Hill; he will take over at Center Street, and current Principal April Smith will move to Principal at North Side, effective July 1st. Current North Side Principal Kristina Gardner was previously hired as the district superintendent to replace Interim Superintendent Diana Zurliene. 26-year-old Brodey I. Murbarger is scheduled to appear in Wayne County Circuit Court today. In February, his attorney, Christian J. Baril, filed a motion for a change of venue, and a hearing on that matter is scheduled for this morning. At the last pre-trial conference last month, Baril filed a motion to continue the jury trial in the case from May 2nd to September 19th, and Judge Michael Molt granted that motion. The Wayne County Board met last night. County Highway Engineer Dennis Seidel reported the road project at Enterprise and the Route 161 Extension is scheduled for the next letting, which should be in June; he estimated the project will begin on or around August 1st. County Clerk Liz Ann Woodrow said 172 years of county records have been digitized; she said it was a major project, and she was proud it had been completed. In action items, Larry McCormick was appointed to a three-year term as Trustee for the Orchardville Fire Protection District. The board reviewed requests for American Rescue Plan dollars, as well. Board Chair Amy Pollard said the money must be spent for governmental purposes, per current guidance, and it can't be held in any type of reserve. The Adult Volunteer Literacy Program at Frontier Community College continues to look for tutors for its students, specifically in the Grayville area. Coordinator of Literacy Development Sharis Wilson says volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a GED or high school equivalency, and complete the required training. For learners, she says the college has switched literacy assessment tests, so students who took the test in the past are encouraged to try the new one. According to our sister station WRUL in Carmi, a missing juvenile has been reported from Norris City. 14-year-old Melani Mighell is a foster child who was temporarily placed with Kathy McGill on South Johnson Street, and she was last noticed at their home about 9 Saturday night. The Greater Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce held its 100th Annual Dinner Meeting last night at the Elks Dining Hall. Brad Jesop received the Outstanding Community Service Award, and Don, Nick, and Anthony Zurliene accepted the Business of the Year Award for Zurliene Enterprises. Additionally, Mayor Mike Dreith handed out the first annual SMILE Award to Kristi Hornung. The award stands for Shines, Motivates, Inspires, Leads, and Excels; winners will be announced quarterly in the future, with one chosen for the new annual award. The Albion City Council met last night. It set Trick or Treating hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on the 30th, and it also heard a request from Knapp Mart to allow the store to sell alcohol so it can install a gaming operation. The council scheduled a Liquor Commission meeting for next Tuesday at 7 to discuss the matter.
