Daniel Zhang, the winner of this year’s
Patricia Grodd Poetry Prize for Young Writers. An eleventh grader from Edison, New Jersey, who attends Phillips Exeter Academy, Zhang won for his poem “Golden.” Praising the poem for its striking imagery, its “small details and grit,” our judge, Emily Nason, wrote: “This poem encapsulates so much of what it means to be a human: the daily heartbreak, violence, and thirst for acceptance we all experience.” Nason selected the winning poem from more than 1,300 submissions by young writers in forty-six states and forty countries outside the United States. Zhang’s poem is printed below.
