Former President Robert Kocharian has again expressed confidence that an emerging opposition force led by him will be Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian’s principal challenger in parliamentary elections expected in June.
“I am conscious of the fact that I will be the main target [of Pashinian’s attacks] and am proud of having deserved this regime’s hatred,” Kocharian told supporters at an indoor meeting held earlier this week.
“The elections will be bipolar,” he said in remarks publicized on Friday. “What the authorities are doing now with regard to me or a possible alliance to be led by me is propaganda directed at me. They are thereby contributing to the formation of this pole.” ....

A leader of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun) acknowledged on Tuesday that the opposition party is discussing with former President Robert Kocharian the possibility of forming an electoral alliance.
Dashnaktsutyun announced its decision to participate in snap parliamentary elections expected in June after a party congress held over the weekend. It said the congress authorized the party’s governing body in Armenia to decide whether to do so separately or in an alliance with other opposition forces.
“As regards the format of our participation, when the elections are [officially] announced we will discuss that and announce our final decision,” the head of the body, Ishkhan Saghatelian, told reporters. “Political consultations are going on right now.” ....

The Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun), a major opposition party, announced on Monday that it will participate in anticipated snap general elections as part of its efforts to oust Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian from power.
In a statement, it said the decision was made at a party congress held over the weekend.
It remained unclear whether Dashnaktsutyun will join an electoral alliance or run for parliament on its own. The statement said the congress authorized the party’s governing body in Armenia to decide “the format of Dashnaktsutyun’s participation” in the elections expected in late June. ....

The Constitutional Court has refused to declare unconstitutional the recent dismissal of the chairwoman of an Armenian parliament committee representing the opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK).
The outspoken lawmaker, Naira Zohrabian, was replaced as head of the committee on human rights in late December for what the parliament’s pro-government majority described as offensive comments posted by her on Facebook.
In an apparent attack on hardcore supporters of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian, Zohrabian lambasted the “scum” which she said has taken over Armenia and is responsible for its recent misfortunes. She said it must be disenfranchised and even forcibly “educated” for the good of the country. ....

YEREVAN When Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian signed a Russian-brokered cease-fire in November to end the war with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh, it created a tumultuous postwar crisis that has eroded public confidence in Yerevan s political establishment.
Opinion polls show the approval rating of Pashinian s government has fallen from about 60 percent in September 2020 to around 30 percent today.
Pashinian s allies faced with political upheaval and declining public confidence in politicians are now working to change the country s election laws ahead of snap parliamentary elections expected in June.
The 45-year-old Pashinian s My Step alliance is revamping parts of the Electoral Code that were put in place in 2016 by his predecessors, the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK), two years before the Velvet Revolution swept him into office. ....
