As the senate prepares to debate a resolution on libya, gadhafi s government says it s been talking to the rebels to claim a peace deal. foreign correspondent richard engel is in egypt, the latest of everything going on in the middle east from libya to the renewed upheaval in syria. let s start with libya. there s been two reports out there. we heard from the gadhafi side about a peace deal. we heard from the rebellion said, gadhafi, he can stay in the country if he leaves power. what s the truth going on in the middle? reporter: the truth is that there are no real serious negotiations between the two sides. these are mostly reports that have been in the media and denials by the government or denials by the rebels. the rebels at one stage said gadhafi could stay in the country if he leaves power. then the government said today that gadhafi has no intention of ever leaving power. ....
The gadhafi side of things say they re withdrawing from the city. the local tribes in that area are trying to negotiate with the rebels. the rebels are saying that s not true. they are saying essentially they ve defeated gadhafi s forces in downtown misrata. they ve cleared them out, especially the snipers who were in a lot of areas there, and pushed them to the western fringe of the city. they say there are still gadhafi forces on the western fringe of the city. the other thing that seems to continue there as well is mortar shelling by gadhafi forces. we are hearing sources in misrata that 15 people have been killed today in misrata. only about seven of those from mortar shelling, the other eight were killed when they picked up unexploded bombs left in the battlefield. it seems as though gadhafi s forces have effectively been ousted from the city center of misrata. and what is this about this u.s. drone attack that was carried out as well? reporter: we re trying to find out inform ....
Supplies over these very long distances across the desert, which is what they would need to mount a serious attack on gadhafi s position in and around tripoli. and the government side, gadhafi side can t do it because they re liable to be knocked out by air power, by the coalition who will probably not allow them to move heavy armor and weapons and so on and maybe not ammunition in an assault against benghazi. so i think we have a deadlock. and i think the way it s got to be resolved, i hope it can be resolved, is politically, and i don t mean by that necessarily the negotiation, i mean by a political process which could on optimistic assumptions mean the collapse of gadhafi s position, the gradual leaking away of support from his position which would in the end force him to throw in the towel. that s an optimistic scenario. the pessimistic scenario is that you simply have deadlock, and you have the two sides sitting ....
