Constellation Cup: Sam Winders rises from Silver Ferns' setbacks to become a stronger netballer

“Going out and coming back [into the Ferns] I’m more aware it s not forever,” Winders said ahead of Saturday s pivotal game three at Christchurch Arena (4.15pm start).
“I think I’m less focussed on the end result kind of mindset and more focussed on the journey and what goes in between and knowing netball isn’t everything and I’ve actually got a pretty choice life out of it.”
The 39-test midcourter, who debuted in 2017, admitted earlier in her career she placed too much pressure on herself around team selection and performance, which wasn’t always healthy.

delivered a well-crafted 49-44 win over Australia in the
opening Constellation Cup match in Christchurch on
Tuesday.
Played in front of an almost empty house due
to the current Level 2 Covid-19 restrictions, the situation
did not deter from a typically willing and hard-fought
trans-Tasman contest.
The Silver Ferns are keen to get
their hands on the Constellation Cup for just the second
time since its inception in 2010, having won it just the
once in 2012.

Constellation Cup: Karin Burger gets chance to shine as Silver Ferns' goal defence

Of those 10 starts, just four have come at goal defence – a position Taurua has indicated she will see significant court-time in against Australia. Burger did start three games at goal defence in the last Constellation Cup held in 2019, playing the full match each time, experiences she would draw on.
Comfortable sliding between wing defence and goal defence, the 27-year-old is content in either role, as long as she’s on court.
Burger and goal keep Watson shape as the Ferns’ first-choice defensive combination against the Diamonds. Fitzpatrick, who was a standout for the Mystics last season, will naturally get her minutes too and could start some games as they look to manage the three players over the series. ....

The Silver Ferns Constellation Cup record against Australia makes for grim reading. They have captured the trophy just once previously in 2012, since it was first contested in 2010. With Australia only scheduled to get out of managed isolation on Monday, the Ferns have a huge opportunity to start the series strongly and capitalise – if there is any quarantine rust from Australia. “That has been the message that has gone through with regard to where the Diamonds are and what they even have to do to get on court.
