To address the issue, the commissioners voted 6-1 to initiate “a text amendment” at the request of Gabe Bove, a Ponte Verda builder of apartments. If approved, the zoning code change would result in the construction of 520 apartments on a 40-acre parcel on the south side of West Atlantic Avenue across from Delray Marketplace. Bove has named the project The Reserve at Atlantic. Mayor Dave Kerner said the decision by his fellow commissioners does “a huge injustice to our beloved Ag Reserve,” adding, “it is death by a thousand cuts.” The commissioners stressed that they simply voted to begin the process and that they will have the opportunity later this year to review the plans and possibly modify or even reject them.
