Fundy Quay Funding Expected Friday


It has been just over a year since council
Local developer Dr. David Elias, who is also part of Friday’s announcement, plans to build a $250-million multi-use development featuring commercial and residential spaces.
But before construction can begin on the much-anticipated project, the city must deliver a “development ready” site.
On Thursday evening, the city’s finance committee endorsed an updated 2021 capital budget, which included the addition of several projects to advance the Fundy Quay redevelopment.
The projects include contaminated soil remediation, site re-grading and seawall refurbishments at the site, along with the redesign of Loyalist Plaza and the extension of Harbour Passage around Fundy Quay. ....

Governments Commit $24M To Prepare Waterfront Site For Development

The long-awaited government funding to help redevelop Fundy Quay in uptown Saint John finally arrived on Friday.
The funding will get the site ready for a proposed $300- 350-million multi-use development on the former Coast Guard site along the city’s waterfront.
The federal government will be contributing $9-million; the New Brunswick government will be contributing $6-million and the City of Saint John will also be contributing nearly $9-million to the project.
The funding will go towards necessary infrastructure work to make the site development-ready. This includes contaminated soil remediation, site re-grading and seawall refurbishments at the site, along with the redesign of Loyalist Plaza and the extension of Harbour Passage around Fundy Quay. ....

City Issues Tender For Seawall Refurbishments

The City of Saint John has issued a tender for seawall refurbishments at the former Coast Guard site on the waterfront.
Work will involve repairing the aging seawall and raising it by around 1.5 metres to protect from rising sea levels and storm surges.
The work is estimated to cost around $8.1 million. The federal government has already committed $3.2 million toward the refurbishments.
Lisa Caissie, a spokesperson for the city, said they remain optimistic that provincial funding will be announced “soon.”
“The refurbishment of the seawall and the development of the Fundy Quay site is a catalytic project that the City looks forward to seeing move forward,” Caissie said in an email. ....

Saint John Issues RFP For Fundy Quay Work

Saint John is seeking engineering proposals for redevelopment work at the Fundy Quay site on the city’s waterfront.
The request for proposals is similar to one issued last July, but with some changes to the scope and requirements.
Work would involve contaminated soil remediation, including the removal of underground storage tanks, and site re-grading.
RFP documents show the soil remediation and site re-grading is estimated to cost as much as $6.6 million.
“The overall project is targeted for tender and construction in late summer of 2021,” said the documents.
But the request for proposals hinges on the city obtaining provincial and federal funding before the end of March. ....
