(WBRC) - Jefferson County Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin confirmed Tuesday a 14-year-old boy, a 9th grader, was killed in the tornado in Fultondale Monday night. The boy was identified by the Jefferson County Coroner Tuesday afternoon as Elliott Hernandez, a student at Fultondale High School. “Out of respect for the family we don’t want to release too much information at this particular time,” said Dr. Gonsoulin. “But we do know that it’s a 14-year-old student in the 9th grade. Which, again, adds to the saddest of the situation.” ....
One Dead, Dozens Injured in Fultondale Tornado A tornado devastated Fultondale Monday night, damaging dozens of homes and businesses in the city just north of Birmingham. Emergency crews are currently surveying damage and assisting with search and rescue efforts. As of 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, one death has been confirmed. 11 people were treated for injuries at the scene last night and another 17 were taken to the hospital. Over 20 homes were destroyed in the area of New Castle Road. Photos shared to social media show how damaging the tornado was to the Fultondale community. Crews from the National Weather Service in Birmingham will be out today to survey damage and assess the strength of the tornado. ....

(WBRC) - A tornado slammed into the Hampton Inn in Fultondale Monday night ripping part of the hotel’s face off and sending debris flying. Survey crews with the National Weather Service found at least high-end EF-2 tornado damage, indicating winds of 135 mph. The hotel is located at I-65 and Walker Chapel Rd. Rooms were exposed to show beds, chairs, wires and bathtubs. Debris from the building smashed cars in the parking lot, and blew out car windshields. ....
