Saitama – For nearly three years, Urawa Reds fans have waited for a chance to see Vissel Kobe captain Andres Iniesta in the flesh.
On Saturday, 4,917 got their chance but it was goals from Tatsuya Tanaka and Kasper Junker that would bring them to their feet as Urawa overcame an error-strewn first half to win 2-0 at Saitama Stadium.
Tanaka’s header off a superb Koya Yuruki cross came just two minutes into the second half, allowing Urawa to hop onto the front foot much to the surprise of Kobe’s star-studded side.
“When we gave up that goal it was inexcusable,” Vissel manager Atsuhiro Miura said. “We lacked concentration, we were too loose. We shouldn’t have given up a goal at that time, and that threw off our balance.”

The members of the Nippon Professional Baseball and J. League joint COVD-19 task force feel their knowledge about the virus and the data they’ve collected has grown exponentially as they enter the body’s second year.
This wealth of information has led both leagues to ask the national government to loosen the current restrictions on attendance at large-scale events from a hard cap of 5,000 to a sliding percentage based on the specifications of each stadium. The leagues feel they can operate safely with proper countermeasures in place.
NPB Commissioner Atsushi Saito, speaking after Monday’s task force meeting, said the league’s 12 clubs have sustained significant financial losses over the past year due to the limits on attendance.

Saitama – The 13,318 fans in attendance at the Emperor’s Cup final between Kawasaki Frontale and Gamba Osaka on New Year’s Day witnessed a cagey affair between two teams pushed to the limit over the course of the pandemic-plagued 2020 J. League season.
The 4,208 fans watching the same two teams at Saturday’s Fuji Xerox Super Cup received a bit more bang for their buck.
Frontale’s Yu Kobayashi scored the 3-2 winner on the last play of the game, salvaging a match that seemed destined for penalty kicks after the reigning J. League champion wasted Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half brace to see Gamba claw back into the game on an unseasonably warm afternoon at Saitama Stadium.
