Niigata: Man, 52, indicted for attempted murder of son, murder of mother-in-law By Tokyo Reporter Staff on February 1, 2021 NIIGATA (TR) – A 52-year-old man has been indicted over the alleged murder of his mother-in-law and attempted murder of his son at their residence in Nagaoka City last year in an incident that also left his wife dead, prosecutors have revealed, reports Fuji News Network (Jan. 22). Early on October 6, Osamu Kanaizumi and his wife Sanae, 51, allegedly used unspecified means to try to kill their son at their residence, located in the Nakanoshima area. They are also alleged to have used a cord to strangle her mother, 80-year-old Fumiko. Sanae then took her life. ....
Hyogo: Mask-wearing spurs pair of fights at convenience stores By Tokyo Reporter Staff on January 31, 2021 HYOGO (TR) – Two fights broke out over mask-wearing at convenience stores in two separate cities in the prefecture on Saturday, police have revealed. At around 7:50 p.m., a female customer inside a convenience store in Nagata Ward, Kobe City punched the manager after he told her, “Please wear a mask.” According to Fuji News Network (Jan. 31), the woman, believed to be in her 50s, was intoxicated at the time. After the incident, a staff member pressed an emergency button to alert police. The second incident took place in Amagasaki City, also at around 7:50 p.m. Prior to that incident, two men, aged 57 and 59, were lined up in front of a register at another convenience store. ....
Hokkaido: Temple accountant embezzled funds ‘to play’ at hostess clubs By Tokyo Reporter Staff on January 29, 2021 HOKKAIDO (TR) – Hokkaido Prefectural Police have arrested a former accountant at a temple over the alleged embezzlement of more than 2 million yen, reports Fuji News Network (Jan. 28). On 25 occasions between December 2016 and June 2018, the suspect, 51, allegedly embezzled 2.55 million yen from a bank account in the name of the temple while he was in charge of accounting. The embezzlement was uncovered through an internal audit in June 2018. The unnamed suspect, who lives in Asahikawa City, was dismissed six months later. Police later launched an investigation to learn the flow of the funds. Police arrested the former accountant on suspicion of corporate embezzlement on Thursday. ....
Ibaraki: Man placed 700 prank calls to taxi firm By Tokyo Reporter Staff on January 27, 2021 IBARAKI (TR) – Ibaraki Prefectural Police have arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly placing prank calls to a taxi firm in Koga City last year, reports Fuji News Network (Jan. 25). Between last July and December, Hayato Iwasaki made 700 calls to the firm in which he either remained silent or a made an insulting remark, such as “die” and “you moron.” Upon his arrest on suspicion of disruption of business, Iwasaki admitted to placing the silent calls. The president of the firm said that Iwasaki placed up to 30 calls per day. “We really cannot tolerate this [kind of thing],” the president said. ....
