An ING board member and housing and economics researcher are among a number of recipients who have been acknowledged in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
The Order of Australia is the primary means of recognising Australians who have contributed to Australia at a national level and comprises four levels: Companion of the Order (AC), Officer of the Order (AO), Member of the Order (AM) and Medal of the Order (OAM).
The Queen’s Birthday Hobours List has named 1,190 award recipients. There are 947 individuals in the General Division of Australia (five AC, 50 AO, 242 AM and 640 OAM), as well as 33 recipients of awards in the Military Division of Australia and 139 meritorious awards. ....

The remarkable bounce-back in superannuation fund returns from last year’s COVID-19 induced plunge continues, with a typical super fund “balanced” investment option growing by 19.3 per cent in the year ended March 31.
Fund researcher SuperRatings figures show that balanced funds, where most working people have their retirement nest-eggs invested, returned 2 per cent in March.
That is the 12th consecutive month of positive returns since the big losses of February and March of last year, when sharemarkets around the world crashed in the wake of the biggest economic slump in almost a century. ....

HESTA appoints portfolio construction and risk GM

HESTA has appointed Michael Sommers as its general manager for portfolio construction and risk.
Sommers would be responsible for managing the strategic asset allocation and risk budgeting process to ensure optimal risk-adjusted returns over the long-term.
“In the past year we’ve seen unique investment opportunities emerge so it’s a great time to focus on making sure our strategic asset allocation and risk management framework continues to be robust and responsive to market conditions, which will help us to keep making a real difference to our members’ retirement savings,” Sommers said.
Sommers was most recently head of alternatives and derivatives at Frontier Advisors for seven years where he led a team covering research and specialist advice to clients on derivative strategies, alternative investments, risk management, and portfolio construction. ....

HESTA today announced Michael Sommers has been appointed as the new General Manager Portfolio Construction & Risk, joining the Fund’s redefined investment leadership structure.
Chief Investment Officer (CIO) Sonya Sawtell-Rickson said the appointment will enhance the delivery of the $56-billion Fund’s investment strategy to keep delivering strong, long-term returns.
“Strengthening our portfolio construction and risk management is key to our overall investment strategy that aims to continue delivering competitive, long-term investment performance for our 870,000-plus members,” Ms Sawtell-Rickson said.
“With over 20 years’ experience in financial services, Michael has a proven track record in portfolio construction, derivative and alternatives strategies and risk management that will complement the skills and capabilities of our existing Investment team talent.
