Soul Legend Isaac Hayes Remembered

Today (August 20th) would have been R&B pioneer Isaac Hayes' 79th birthday. Hayes is best known for his years as a writer, performer, and producer for the legendary Stax label, having composed, along with his partner David Porter, Sam & Dave's landmark '60s hits "Hold On! I'm Comin'," "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby," "You Don't Know Like I Know," "Soul Man," and "I Thank You," among other hits, including Carla Thomas' "B-A-B-Y." Hayes died of what is believed to be a stroke on August 10th, 2008. As a solo performer, Hayes scored hits with his cover of Dionne Warwick's "Walk On By," and "Theme From Shaft," which topped the charts in 1971. "Theme From Shaft" earned Hayes two Grammys, and an Oscar for Best Song In A Motion Picture making him the first African-American songwriter to win an Academy Award. We can probably expect fewer shockeroos both in terms of omitting records that met all the usual criteria and still weren’t nominated and including records that had barely registered.
This past year, The Weeknd’s failure to receive a single nomination made the most headlines, but nearly as surprising was Harry Styles’ failure to land a nomination in any of the Big Three categories: album, record and song of the year.
For most of Grammy history, The Weeknd and Styles would have been automatic Grammy nominees in the top categories not just because they had huge commercial success, but also because they made great records that represented a meaningful advance in their careers. In 787, the church of St. Corneille at Compiegne installed an organ at the request of Frankish King Pepin, in what is modern-day France. This is the first recorded mention of this musical instrument.
In 1928, saxophonist Fraser MacPherson, one of the most respected jazz musicians in Western Canada, was born in Winnipeg. A resident of Vancouver from 1948 on, he received international attention in 1975 with his album Fraser: Live at the Planetarium.  He died of cancer in 1993.
In 1932, Nate Nelson, lead singer of The Flamingos, was born in Chicago. The R&B group scored their first U.S. hit in 1953 and hit the charts as late as 1970. I ll Be Home and I Only Have Eyes For You were two of their biggest hits. Nelson joined The Platters in 1962. He died in 1984. ....
