What locations come to mind when someone says "wine region?" Maybe Napa Valley or Tuscany or the entire country of France? Sure, sure, those places aren't bad. But what about something a little closer to home? Turns out that there are plenty of wonderful wine regions right here on the East Coast. Don't buy it? From Long Island and Rhode Island, New Jersey and North Carolina, here are four vintages that might change your opinion of where to find the best wines. Anchor & Hope's Archipelago Chardonnay ($20) The "archipelago" here refers to Long Island and Aquidneck Island, homes to the Greenvale and Macari vineyards. The Macari family and Greenville Estate have both been growing Chardonnay grapes for four decades. Rumford, Rhode Island craft winery Anchor & Hope pulls the two islands grapes together for a big bodied wine with a shake of sea salt and splash of tropical fruit. It also comes in a 250ml can for beach days, barbecues and Taylor Swift tailgating. Macari Vineyards 2020 Bergen Road ($75) Speaking of Macari Vineyards… The company, set on the North Fork of Long Island, makes a few well-respected wines (it has a highly-recommended $24 Sauvignon Blanc). But its flagship wine, Bergen Road, might be the best red produced on the East Coast. Yes, it is very expensive so it's probably a once a year splurge – maybe find three friends and each split a hefty glass. It's also a red blend full of body and lusciousness. A healthy pour on its own can feel like a well-earned meal, but go nuts and pair it with some ricotta gnocchi in blush sauce. Biltmore Estate Albariño ($18) You should learn to make paella. Or maybe just head to Valencia for a pan. Or how about you quit your job and move to Spain. But first, some baby steps. The Iberian Peninsula's best summer wine is Albariño. And you can get a great bottle produced in the States, North Carolina's Biltmore Estate to be specific. Biltmore's bottle of Albariño uses grapes from the winery's California partners for something a little sweet, a little crisp, and fully refreshing. The hotter the day, the more delicious this wine is. Renault's American Champagne Reserve ($46) Some Renault Winery fun facts! It's the oldest winemaker and survived Prohibition by making sacramental wines and "Renault Wine Tonic" for "medicinal purposes." But how is its sparkling white? Pretty darn good. It's a smart balance of sweet and tart. You'll like the taste at home. You'll love it sitting in front of a fire pit at Renault's sprawling 1,400-acre South Jersey property. Head on down. Make a weekend of it. #
