FreightWaves Classics: Railway Express Agency was THE express package delivery service


Express services began in the 1830s
Express service has been defined as the prompt and safe movement of parcels, money and goods at rates higher than standard freight rates.
Many historians credit William Harnden for starting the business category. In 1839 he began carrying express goods on regular trips between New York and Boston (even though a direct New York to Boston rail line was not yet in service). As business grew he formed Harnden’s First Express and even initiated shipments by steamboat.

In 1845, following Harnden’s death, the company was merged with Adams Express as a new business sector grew rapidly. Its growth was sparked by the ever-expanding railroads. Movement of freight, packages and people that once took days or weeks could now be accomplished in a fraction of the time. ....

The history of Quality Distribution, Inc. (QDI) is really the story of several companies that were combined or acquired over several decades. This FreightWaves Haul of Fame article provides an overview of that history.
Humble beginnings
Quality Carriers was founded by B.F. Leaman in 1913 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Leaman and his son Clair delivered loads of milk and lime around the county. By 1930, they were successful enough to purchase Mileage Motor Corporation, and began hauling fuel oil in addition to the lime and milk. In 1933, the Leaman Transportation Company was formed.  ....

The Eagle Group is a diverse group of five privately held companies that has grown from a livery company founded in 1903 in Wenatchee, Washington. 
Wenatchee is located on Washington state’s eastern plateau between the Cascade Mountains to the west and the Columbia River on the east. It is about 150 miles east of Seattle. Its population in 1903 was less than 500 people; today’s population is approximately 35,000. 
The Eagle Group’s five companies provide products and services ranging from trucking/intermodal to information technologies to emergency medical transport.  ....

Deregulation of the U.S. trucking industry began in the late 1970s. Congress passed the Motor Carrier Act of 1980 and it was signed into law by President Carter on July 1, 1980. This ended 45 years of onerous regulation by the federal Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC).
One of the most dramatic changes that occurred due to deregulation was the virtual explosion in the number of trucking firms. From 1980 to 1990, the number of licensed carriers doubled – from fewer than 20,000 to more than 40,000!  ....
