Primary elections in New York are June 22, and there are a number of contested primaries to watch in the Rochester area.
The marquee matchup is for mayor of Rochester, where two-term incumbent Lovely Warren faces a significant challenge from City Council member Malik Evans.
Also on the primary ballot, or else the general election ballot for November: five seats on City Council and three on the city Board of Education; all Monroe County Legislature positions; and the Monroe County sheriff.

Evans is a first-term City Councilman and former city school board president.
In the heavily Democratic city, whoever wins the primary is almost certain to win election come November 2nd. The term is four years.
On Sept. 12, Buffalo police shot Willie Henley, a troubled man that relatives say had a history of mental illness. He was charged with assault after swinging a baseball bat at police. Two weeks earlier, the March 2020 death of Daniel Prude in Rochester came to light with the release of police body camera footage that showed him as a troubled, naked man gasping to breathe in a spit helmet. And suddenly, the already boiling issue of race and policing turned to look at how police interact with people with mental illness.

Hundreds of people scattered chaotically in the early-morning darkness. Trying to escape a volley of gunfire, the young people gathered for a backyard party dispersed in countless different directions.
Ultimately, two 19-year-old Rochester residents were killed, 14 more were struck by gunfire, and police were left to sift through a massive and confusing scene. As they tried to get people to safety, they also had to gather others for interviews. What happened just after 1 a.m. on Sept. 19 in the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue is still under investigation. Police haven t made any arrests in the largest shooting in recent memory.
