Bevois Street, which dated back to around 1830, once led to St Mary Street from Longcroft Street. The buildings were demolished in the 1960s to make way for the Golden Grove estate. Very few of the buildings remain, those of which make up part of Jonas Nichols Square. Many of the buildings to have been demolished were, or were at one time, pubs or beer houses.
