Malmesbury marks 100 years of Royal British Legion

People in Malmesbury marked two poignant occasions this week.
The Royal British Legion’s centenary was celebrated on May 15. The organisation resulted from combining four ex-Servicemen’s welfare bodies after the First World War under the leadership of Field Marshal Earl Haig and Sir Frederick Lister. The first Poppy Appeal was held in 1921 and the money used to support those who have served in the Armed Forces and their families.
In Malmesbury the Ivy Branch of the National Federation of Discharged & Demobilized Sailors and Soldiers was formed in May 1919 followed by a Post of the Comrades of the Great Was in June 1920. These disbanded and the Malmesbury Branch of the British Legion opened on 10th November 1921. The hopes to have an exhibition commemorating the branch’s history this November. ....

It s 100 years since the Royal British Legion was founded on May 15, 2021 - and Suffolk has been involved right from the start.
Although celebrations have inevitably been impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, Suffolk RBL is planning a special centenary service on September 19 at St Edmundsbury Cathedral.
Suffolk county chairman Ken Rowbottom said: We have been doing huge amounts of planning and are hoping to go ahead in September.
On the centenary day itself,  Saturday, May 15, the RBL is marking its centenary with a special event at the Cenotaph in London, which people around the country will be able to watch via livestream on Facebook. ....
