Our nation was born out of the hope that every individual has the opportunity to get ahead and succeed regardless of their heritage and religious beliefs. But today fewer and fewer people see the possibility for themselves and their families to improve their lot in life because the playing fields are not level. Where they live, the color of their skin, their heritage, their sex and their sexual orientation limits or enhances one’s ability to get ahead in life. Educational opportunities differ by the wealth of the school districts, and many parents feel powerless to provide a quality education for their children. Our justice system does not provide equal treatment for rich and poor, or persons of color. Our health care system is skewed to provide needed services to the rich by saying that we are incapable of providing adequate care for all.
