us now live from children s national medical center where the boy is treated tonight. reporter: when that boy arrived here late tuesday night in grave condition, the result police say of a brutal beating received at the hand of his mother s boyfriend, all of it over a piece of cake. with his mother at work on tuesday, the boy was left at this apartment in the care of his uncle and his mother s boyfriend robert leroy wilson. according to court documents, when wilson caught the boy stealing cake, he cuffed his hands and beat the defenseless child until he was unresponsive and stiff. the boy s uncle took the cuffs off and called 911. to have a 9-year-old in the condition he s in now because an adult literally beat him into that condition is traumatic. it s marched on all of us to hard on all of us to deal with those things. reporter: a neighbor said nothing about wilson stood out when they chatted about motorcycles in the parking lot. seemed like a normal everyday guy,
