The tennis world mourns one of its greatest supporters
Tony Trabert, who saw the sport from all angles as a major champion and ambassador both on and off the court, has passed away aged 90. His record of 106 match wins and 18 singles titles in the 1955 season remains one of the greatest years in tennis history.
The universally popular American enriched tennis for more than 70 years as the world’s top amateur player, a contract pro, a manager of Jack Kramer’s troupe and executive director of a fledgling players association, which helped push for Open tennis. His insight for more than 30 years as a highly successful television commentator and analyst, helped to drive the sport’s boom and brought the US Open and other major championships to new audiences. He was also a two-time Davis Cup winning captain of the United States, a coach, an author and later served as the President of the International Tennis Hall of Fame before his health and mobility began to suffer. ....

Four days from Australia Day, news broke that tennis champion turned Pentecostal minister Margaret Court – who has publicly expressed strong views opposing LGBTQ+ rights – was to be elevated from Officer of the Order of Australia (AO), awarded in 2007, to Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), the nation’s highest honour.
Politicians including federal Opposition leader Anthony Albanese and Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews were also critical of the decision. Prime Minister Scott Morrison declined to comment on Court’s medal, but did say the honours system was a “completely independent process”. ....
