JOAQUIN SARMIENTO/AFP via Getty Images 26 May 2021 In late April, Colombia watched as peaceful demonstrations against an ill-timed tax reform turned violent. The ensuing riots spanned several weeks and engulfed almost every major city in the country. The flat-footed administration of President Iván Duque eventually rescinded the unpopular policy. But that didn’t matter. The violence raged on as groups of rioters systemically burned public transportation, defaced and pulled down cultural monuments, vandalized private property and places of commerce, and injured nearly 900 police officers. It was soon apparent that the tax issue was merely a pretext for violence. That story should sound familiar. ....
18 May 2021 A report by the Center for a Secure Free Society (SFS), a national security think tank, revealed evidence Tuesday of extensive foreign influence in the ongoing leftist riots in Colombia, including the spread of misinformation by Asian social media accounts and infiltration by Venezuela’s socialist regime. Colombia is nearing a month of violent riots nationwide, initially in response to a proposed progressive tax reform by President Iván Duque. Duque’s plan, which would have punished the middle and lowers classes amid an economic tailspin exacerbated by the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, inspired outrage from both the left and his own right-wing party, the Democratic Center. Duque announced he would no longer support the proposal four days into a leftist “national strike” against it, but his move did nothing to halt the violence. ....
Colombia: Mobs Attack Medical Supply Trucks amid Leftist Riots 13 May 2021 Armed robbers in Colombia targeted several shipments of medical and humanitarian aid to areas devastated by leftist riots on Wednesday, jeopardizing the country’s Chinese coronavirus response. Colombia has endured two weeks of what leftist groups have dubbed a “national strike,” in which members of unions, indigenous groups, and others on the political left have organized road blockades and police station attacks against the government of conservative President Iván Duque. The protests were initially dubbed a response to Duque’s attempts to promote a progressive nationwide tax hike, but the national outcry resulted in Duque dropping the plan almost immediately. Groups participating in the strike have not issued any clear demands to the government as of Thursday in exchange for ending the violence. ....
ACAB: Terrorist Mobs Burn Police Alive in Colombia 6 May 2021 Terrorist mobs have destroyed 25 police emergency response stations in Bogotá, Colombia, alone as of Wednesday night in a spate of violent attacks nationwide. Eyewitnesses say the assailants were attempting to burn police officers alive and, in some cases, succeeded in setting them on fire. Colombia is in the midst of what leftist movements are calling a “national strike” against the government, police officers, and authority in general. Some unrest began last week in response to conservative President Iván Duque proposing a large tax hike on most of the country, claiming it necessary to combat the negative economic effects of the Chinese coronavirus pandemic. Widely panned by a bipartisan coalition that including the head of Duque’s party, former President Álvaro Uribe, the tax reform failed to pass and Duque announced Sunday he would no longer pursue it. ....
