Metro Detroit is home to the oldest, largest and most diverse Muslim American communities in the U.S. Only in recent years, however, have being visibly Muslim and publicly engaging in some of its practices, including fasting for Ramadan, become less stigmatized in some communities than it might have been in the past. And as many Muslim Americans resumed gathering with family after two years of isolation, some were motivated to create more opportunities for shopping and celebrating, as awareness of Ramadan and other Muslim observances grows in schools and wider communities.
