Brexit border friction rises

By Lizzy Burden, Bloomberg 10 Mar 2021  08:59  Image: Paul Faith/Bloomberg Friction at the UK border is rising again following Brexit as shipping companies rejected more cargoes due to cross the English Channel from France. The rate that freight companies declined to take shipments that were scheduled to move rose last week and is now 69% higher than the average in the third quarter, according to the logistics platform Transporeon. “Uncertainty in the transport market” is increasing, especially on the France-to-UK route, said Transporeon Chief Executive Stephan Sieber. The figures add to evidence of constraints on Britain’s ability to trade goods in the next few months. Those tensions are likely to increase starting in April when the European Union phases in full customs checks, threatening to increase delays at ports and hold up imports.

UK, sick man of Europe , to hold crisis talks amid mutant virus | Brexit News

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will chair a meeting of the government’s emergency committee after France closed its borders to the UK to stem the spread of a new strain of the coronavirus circulating in London and the southeast of England. The meeting of the COBRA civil contingencies committee later Monday comes amid warnings of “significant disruption” around the ports in the English Channel, with traffic backlogs stretching miles into the southeastern English county of Kent. Freight transport is facing massive disruptions after France closed its borders for 48 hours, which means lorries cannot get across the English Channel by boat. The government has urged everyone to avoid travelling to Kent, which hosts many of the cross-Channel ports, notably at Dover. Eurotunnel has also suspended services.
