Cleveland author outlines ‘100 Things To Do In Alaska Before You Die,” from snorkeling to searching for gold
Susan Glaser, cleveland.com
CLEVELAND, Ohio Many visitors to Alaska barely see beyond the shore, as passengers on large cruise ships that sail the scenic southeast coast.
Maybe this is the summer to extend that vision past the gangplank, and into the state’s interior.
Cleveland author Fran Golden has plenty of ideas to get you started. Golden, with co-author Midgi Moore, just published “100 Things to Do in Alaska Before You Die” (Reedy Press, $19.95), a trove of ideas both unfamiliar and tried and true. ....

Fed Up Cruise Lines Ditching U.S. Threatens to Divert Some $56 Billion in Economic Impact – gCaptain

By Fran Golden (Bloomberg)
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offered a rare glimmer of hope for the cruise industry this week, with the agency saying in a statement to Bloomberg that the latest aspect of its phased return to U.S. cruising “aligns with the desire for resumption of passenger operations in the United States expressed by many major cruise ship operators and travelers, hopefully by mid-summer.”
The comment came only after hard criticism from the cruise industry followed an announcement on April 2 that the agency was releasing technical guidance to inform port agreements and deal with Covid-19 outbreaks. With no indication regarding when cruise lines might finally receive the green light to sail or even when they could begin to conduct simulated sailings, or “test cruises,” to assess new health protocols it barely advanced the industry’s stalled position. ....

Small Cruises Are Thriving, Not Just Surviving, on the Mississippi – gCaptain

On the fancy, new, 245-passenger
American Countess riverboat, passengers sip complimentary mint juleps on a top deck, masks wrapped around their wrists like bulging bracelets, while the ship’s big, red paddlewheel churns through the Mississippi. It’s a post-pandemic sight to behold even if these are not quite post-pandemic times. Still, its mere occurrence puts John Waggoner, founder and chief executive officer of the four-ship American Queen Steamboat Co., in the catbird seat as far as the cruise industry is concerned.
On long, white-and-red-painted boats with open decks, decorated with fanciful Victorian-style gingerbread trim, Waggoner sells hardcore Americana that’s steeped in U.S. history. It’s a hot product under the current circumstances, he says. ....

Round-the-World Cruises Selling Out More Than a Year in Advance – gCaptain

By Fran Golden (Bloomberg)
After a year of isolation and lockdowns, four months on a ship is looking pretty good to cruise super fans.
The Covid-19 pandemic was raging in July when Viking Ocean Cruises opened reservation books for a 136-day world cruise itinerary. The Christmas 2021 departure sold out in weeks. In December, in the midst of a second wave, the company opened a second cruise for the same period. It, too, quickly sold out.
The company had no trouble filling two of its nearly identical 930-passenger ships,
Viking Star and
Viking Neptune, even though the borders of many of the two dozen countries the plan to visit remain largely closed to international visitors. The only cabins that went unsold, in fact, were those blocked off for potential quarantine needs. Now the line is scrambling to put together an additional around-the-world itinerary starting in 2023. ....
