Check It Out: 'Shellebrate' World Turtle Day with books

The month of May celebrates World Turtle Day (or as the website, worldturtleday.org, cleverly explains, it’s time to “shellebrate” all things turtle). When it comes to reptiles, I have no problem playing favorites: turtles win. I’m a fan of these slow-movers for several reasons. First of all, “slow” is not a bad thing; in my opinion, the fast lane is overrated. Sheltering in place? Well, turtles have always been able to do this. And I am pretty smitten with turtle faces. Looking at all those wrinkles, I can’t help but imagine what type of conversation I might have with Mr. or Mrs. Turtle: leisurely, full of wisdom, and completely at home with silence. How peaceful that sounds. ....

Did you know that April 11 is National Eight-Track Tape Day? My parents had an eight-track player when I was a kid, and believe it or not, I thought it was pretty cool. I can still hear the “ka-chunk” of the cartridge going into the player and the loud “clicks” in between songs. My favorite memory of listening to eight-track tapes didn’t happen at home but on a lake. My great-aunt and -uncle lived in the same small town as my family in southern Nevada. One year my uncle won a local contest in which the grand prize was a three-day houseboat trip on Lake Mead. There were seven of us who went on the trip, and I have to say it was a hoot. The houseboat came equipped with an eight-track player and a small collection of tapes. If w ....

I haven’t dyed Easter eggs in a long time because it’s just not as fun as when I was a kid. Half the joy in coloring eggs is knowing that an Easter egg hunt is about to happen. True, I could still dye eggs and hide them around the yard, but this sounds silly when you consider that I would be hiding and hunting all by myself. Although, depending on the day and my stress level, I might not remember where I hid the eggs, so the hunt would be for real. And that’s no yolk. ....
