Bishop Atherley suggests Barbados needs external help to tackle crime

Former Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley has urged the Government to seek foreign help to deal with the current spate of crime.“I wish to urge consideration by the authorities of inviting a team of specialist investigators into Barbados to help us get to the bottom of the dangerous criminal activity of gun importation, gun trade and use in Barbados,” he said in an interview with Barbados TODAY.The leader of the Alliance Party for Progress (APP) stressed that his suggestion was not an indictment on the investigative capacity of the local police authority and service.Instead, he said, it was “an acknowledgement of a multifaceted context in which such violent crime is taking place in Barbados”.“This includes the high incidence of violent attacks and death, absence of arrests and prosecutions related to gun importation and trafficking, [and] obviously divided opinion among authorities and experts in the field of police operations and investigations,” Bishop Atherley asse ....

Atherley: 'Barbadians should have say on renaming Independence Day'

Former Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley believes Barbadians should have a say in renaming Independence Day.He insisted that the since-reversed decision to change the name to Barbados National Day should not have been made in the absence of public consultation.Late Wednesday, a day after announcing that Cabinet had agreed November 30 would be observed as Barbados National Day from this year, Minister of Home Affairs and Information Wilfred Abrahams issued a statement saying that the move would be put on hold as this was not the right time for the change. The about-turn followed public backlash and a petition and weekend protest march planned by the Democratic Labour Party.“I hope the Government takes this very seriously. This should have never been a Cabinet decision alone and in itself should have been a wider consultative process than that. But to the extent that the Cabinet did decide that and it was announced, I hope that they go beyond that and forget about the change of t ....

Good initiatives; need to be managed - Atherley

Former Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley has given a thumbs up to the measures announced by Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley to help Barbadians cope with the rising cost of living. However, he is warning Government to keep a close eye on the private sector to make sure that they follow through with making the adjustments to the prices of their goods and services.Atherley, who is chairman of the Alliance Party for Progress (APP), also saluted the private sector for being part of the arrangements that allow for consumers to benefit from lower prices, but said it must not be forgotten that prior to the war between Russia and Ukraine, inflation trends were evident in Barbados. He said consumers crying out about high prices started long before the ongoing war in Europe, which has made the situation worse.“Having said that, the move is a good move. I do not think ultimately all that could have been done has been done and we hope that we would hear from the Government further in terms o ....
