Fort Bragg Special Forces battle rumors and claims of extremist ties


As Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has directed all military branches to identify extremism in the ranks, officials with the U.S. Army Special Operations Forces on Fort Bragg say none of its soldiers are known to belong to such groups.  
In April, NBC News released an investigation claiming extremist views and conspiracy theories are shared in anonymous Facebook groups with members who claim to be past or current members of Special Operation Forces.  
The NBC report does not name the Facebook users who said they are Special Forces soldier and does not say if their military status was verified.   ....

Former Fort Bragg soldier who fatally shot 3 dies in prison

TOPEKA, KS An avowed antisemite with ties to Fort Bragg and Harnett County died in a Kansas prison this week where he was awaiting the death penalty for killing three people at Jewish sites in suburban Kansas City in 2014, the Kansas Department of Corrections said Tuesday.
Frazier Glenn Miller Jr., 80, also known as Frazier Glenn Cross Jr., died Monday at the El Dorado Correctional Facility, where he was serving a sentence for capital murder, attempted murder, assault and firearms convictions.
An autopsy will be performed to determine a cause of death, but preliminary indications were that Miller died of natural causes, Carol Pitts, a spokeswoman for the corrections department, said in a news release. She declined to comment further on Miller’s death or medical condition. ....

Fayetteville native to lead North Carolina Highway Patrol


A Cumberland County native has been named the next commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Wednesday. 
Maj. Freddy L. Johnson Jr. was raised in Fayetteville and is a Fayetteville State University alumnus, the release said.
After graduating at the top of his class in the Highway Patrol Basic School in 1996, Johnson began his career as a state trooper in Lumberton, according to the news release.
The majority of his career he spent in Cumberland and Robeson counties, the release said.
“Being chosen to lead such a great organization with such great people is an incredible honor,” Johnson said in the news release. “I will do all I can to support the men and women of the patrol while continuing to build stronger partnerships with the communities we serve across this great state. ....
