Elaine Hugh-Jones,  who has died aged 93, was a pianist and composer known for her powerful yet sensitive and tuneful songs; she was also a stalwart of BBC radio and television, working as official accompanist on countless programmes from the postwar years until 1983.
Of her several song cycles the best known are the seven Walter de la Mare Songs, written between 1966 and 1988, which blend the French influence of Gabriel Fauré with the English romanticism she inherited from her teacher Lennox Berkeley. The cycle was broadcast several times on Radio 3 and was followed by several more including the powerful Songs of War, settings of Wilfred Owen’s poetry, and arrangements of verses by Frances Cornford and Gerard Manley Hopkins. ....

Forgotten Voices review – students bring neglected composers to life

Marking International Women’s Day in a week-long festival online, the SWAP’ra organisation – Supporting Women and Parents in Opera – is celebrating female composers, both past and present, whose music has not been sufficiently known, if at all. Singers from seven different conservatoires appear in the Forgotten Voices series, spotlighting no fewer than 30 composers from Europe and the Americas.
Students from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama – coached by mezzo-soprano and SWAP-ra co-founder, Kitty Whately – inaugurated proceedings with a livestreamed concert featuring three Welsh composers and one from Scotland. Morfydd Owen, who had seemed assured of a bright future, was just 26 when she died in 1918 from complications following an appendectomy. All her songs had a light and natural flow, but it was Gweddi y Pechadur (Prayer of the Sinner), a Welsh favourite, which came over most effectively ....

The power of song: Pocklington s Forgotten Voices community choir has been holding its rehearsals online during the pandemic
A community choir that has been helping people find their voices for over a decade are inviting new members to join them as they continue their rehearsals online in lockdown.
Pocklington Arts Centre’s Forgotten Voices Community Choir formed 10 years ago with the aim of helping people rediscover the joys of singing in a friendly, sociable setting under the directorship of Sam Dunkley.
The group usually meet at the arts centre from 7-9pm every Tuesday evening to rehearse songs from a wide range of genres including pop, folk, classical, and musical theatre. ....
