Algeria has renewed its demand for France to compensate for the nuclear tests it conducted in its vast desert before and after independence. The case is considered among the unresolved crimes committed by colonialism, and it is one of the most sensitive issues between both countries.
Marking the occasion of the 61st anniversary of the first French nuclear explosion in the Algerian desert, on Feb. 13, 1960, Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum said in a statement on Twitter that the impacts of the tests as “catastrophic.”

Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis held talks with Algerian Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad and Foreign Minister Sabri Boukadoum in Algiers at the start of a week-long visit to North and West Africa.
The discussions in Algiers from Sunday to Tuesday focused on migration, regional security and management of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as plans to boost economic relations, according to a foreign ministry statement.
Both sides agreed to step up cooperation “in various fields” and to settle conflicts “at a regional and international level” peacefully, Boukadoum was quoted by the Algerian Press service.

The highest ranking U.S. diplomat for North Africa and the Middle East traveled Saturday to the city of Laayoune, which Morocco considers the capital of the Western Sahara, laying the groundwork for the United States to set up a consulate in the disputed territory.
The U.S. Embassy in Morocco s capital, Rabat, called the visit by Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker historic.
The United States agreed to recognize Morocco s claim over Western Sahara as part of a deal engineered by Washington for the normalization of ties between Morocco and Israel. U.S. President Donald Trump announced the deal last month.
