Hopkinsville, KY, USA / WHOP 1230 AM | News Radio Mar 16, 2021 4:05 PM Governor Andy Beshear reported the lowest number of new cases of COVID-19 for a Tuesday in over a month during a briefing that also included an update on outbreaks at prison facilities in Lyon County. There were 819 new cases and 24 additional deaths, the positivity rate was 3.87 percent and the governor said hospitalizations, ICU admissions and patients on a ventilator were all down. Kentucky set another record for vaccinations last week and at least 1,026,047 Kentuckians have received at least their first dose. The number of inmates and staff in state correctional facilities infected has spiked by over 600 in the last two weeks and Executive Cabinet Secretary J. Michael Brown says almost all of the new cases have been at the Kentucky State Penitentiary and West Kentucky Correctional Complex in Lyon County. ....

After a couple days with no new reported cases, there remains six active in-person student cases, one in the Virtual Learning Academy and zero active staff cases. Superintendent Chris Bentzel says they’re hopeful to keep that trend going, and more Virtual Learning Academy students are starting to return to in-person learning. ....

Christian County Emergency Management Director Randy Graham had not received any reports of any local issues with any of the 24 sirens in Christian County working properly. Todd County Emergency Management Director Daniel Smith says they discovered an issue with dispatch being able to control the Guthrie siren and that issue was being addressed. Even so, he says the Guthrie siren and all of the others in the county are working. ....

The Ag. Expo Center, located on Pembroke Road near the Christian County Ag. Extension Office, recently wrapped up the bulk of construction and has already hosted events, including a barrel race that showcased a large number of horses and riders. Jay Stone says there’s always been a need for a facility like this in the community, not just for those interested in agriculture related events. ....
