Something that struck me about that Albert Breer interview with Jaguars Media last week was his assertion that Urban Meyer won t be pointing fingers at players, and that the emphasis will be on coaches developing players. He even went so far as to say that Urban believes NFL players are inherently good and it s on coaches to develop them. It seems like Urban believes that it s always coaching in the NFL, or at least it s far more important than you believe.
Coaching matters very much in the NFL. It is particularly important for head coaches – and by extension, assistants – to set the tone and standard for an organization, and to ensure players understand that standard. When I say, it s always coaching in the NFL, I m usually talking about fans criticizing coaches for play-calling and fans who believe firing a defensive or offensive coordinator on a Monday will magically transform a team into greatness by the following Sunday. Here s the bigge ....

KOAF - is it just me, or do you think we will spend the big money on the defensive side of the ball and draft for the offensive side? With left tackle Cam Robinson not worth a king s ransom (or left guard Andrew Norwell, for that matter) and a strong O-Line for this upcoming draft, we could fill out the line with potentially better replacements and use our money on better players for areas of need. What do you say?
I say there s a decent chance the Jaguars will spend big free-agent money on defense during the 2021 offseason – with one reason being this isn t a great draft for interior defensive tackle, which appears to be a major offseason need. But beware of believing the Jaguars can automatically improve the offensive line by moving on from veterans such as Robinson, Norwell and center Brandon Linder and replacing them in the draft. Norwell and Linder both played well last season, particularly Norwell. Robinson perhaps didn t play well enough to ear ....

JACKSONVILLE – Senior writer John Oehser offers five things to know about new Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke …
1.Balke isn t new to the Jaguars. While Baalke was named the permanent general manager on Tuesday, he s not new to the Jaguars organization. Baalke, 56, was hired as the team s director of player personnel on February 4, 2020. He spent more than nine months in that role, and was promoted to interim general manager on November 29 when the Jaguars dismissed former General Manager David Caldwell. Baalke had spent the previous three seasons – 2017-2019 – as a football operations consultant with the National Football League. ....

All offseason we heard that we should give General Manager Dave Caldwell and Head Coach Doug Marrone a chance without former Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tom Coughlin. We heard things like the communication is much better, their vision for the team is aligned and everyone is on the same page. All offseason, it was made clear that Doug wasn t the general manager, but that he was heavily involved in choosing the players and that Dave was finding players that Doug liked. Through training camp Doug constantly told everyone who would listen that this team would be competitive. I can agree with you that he has done a good or even great job coaching this team once the season started. But I just can t get past the idea that he thought this roster ever had a chance to be competitive. How do you think that applies to the decision of whether he stays with the team next season? ....
