Carbon markets 101

Jun 5, 2021
T.J. Adkins
The development of agricultural ecosystem credit markets, specifically carbon markets, is a hot topic in the popular press and Washington, DC. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 10% of carbon dioxide, a primary greenhouse gas, is emitted by the agricultural sector. While this is relatively a small portion of overall carbon dioxide emissions by the economic sector, agriculture has received a lot of attention in reducing overall GHG emissions recently. The Ag sector is viewing carbon markets as an opportunity to attract additional revenue while adopting production practices to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improving soil health and yields, and potentially reducing input use. Various forms of carbon markets are being developed across the nation as companies attempt to reduce their own carbon foot-print by offering payments to farmers to offset their own carbon emissions and to attract environmen ....

By Travis Cleven

Last week was the Ag & Food Policy Summit and the theme was “Climate Risks, Rewards, & Uncertainties.” One of the speakers was Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack who spoke about the market opportunities for farmers internationally and domestically.
He explained that one of the obligations the United States Department of Agriculture has is to look for markets. “I think there is an opportunity for us in the next several years to expand markets, to have more markets, better markets, and new markets,” Vilsack said.
He broke them down between more markets, better markets, and new markets. Starting with more markets, Vilsack said that it all begins with trade. “When we talk about more markets it obviously starts with trade. As we all know, 20 to 30% of everything that’s grown in the United States is exported,” he went on to talk about USMCA, “when you talk about trade, I think you need to start with the USMCA and the imp ....
