Pundits weigh in on Facebook's Australian news outage

Pundits weigh in on Facebook’s Australian news outage

Following Facebook Inc.’s decision to block users from viewing or sharing Australian news, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he won’t back down from implementing the new media law, a decision that has drawn criticism as well as plaudits.
This morning Australians woke up to find that they were unable to read Facebook pages of media, whether they were local or international. Moreover, anyone outside Australia could not see Australian media on their news feeds. Unlike Google LLC, Facebook decided it wouldn’t make a deal with Australia regarding paying for news, instead preferring, in Morrison’s words, to “unfriend Australia.” ....

Thomas Gallatin: Where Stands the Battle Against Big Tech Censorship? — The Patriot Post

Following Facebook and Twitter’s banishing of Donald Trump and Google, Apple, and Amazon’s deplatforming of competitor Parler, Republicans, conservatives, and free speech advocates of all stripes have been even more aggressively ringing alarm bells. So, what has transpired since?
First, Big Tech is a lot more powerful than many may have appreciated. Parler, which filed a lawsuit against Amazon Web Services (AWS) for breach of contract, had its demand for a preliminary injunction denied by a Washington State federal court. However, as The Federalist’s Margot Cleveland observes, the failure to win the injunction was not the court’s fault. She notes, “The court’s analysis proved solid — and sadly also proved it will be hard for conservatives to counter Big Tech’s stranglehold on the modern public square.” This is due primarily to the fact that “the governing legal precedent makes it unlikely anyone seeking to challenge a deplatfor ....

Following Facebook and Twitter banning both former President Donald Trump and other conservatives, many migrated to alternative social media app Parler. But in a supposed effort to prevent further incitements of violence, both Google and Apple removed Parler from their app stores while Amazon shut of the services’ web servers.
The big tech companies had deemed Parler dangerous with Google calling it an “ongoing urgent public safety thread.” Meanwhile, Apple quickly rejected as insufficient a plan by the company to moderate its content. On the other hand, Amazon’s employees has asked that the company “deny Parler services until it removes posts inciting violence, including at the Presidential inauguration.” ....

India's BJP Members Voice Concern After Trump is 'Deplatformed' – The Diplomat

The decision of key U.S. social media platforms to ban outgoing President Donald Trump has caused much consternation among the Indian right-wing and supporters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Following Facebook’s decision to indefinitely ban Trump from its platform, and Twitter’s first temporary, and then permanent, suspension of @realDonaldTrump, key pro-BJP voices have spoken out against it, and in the process, revealed their worry that Facebook and Twitter might crack down on them at some point in the near future.
On January 9, Amit Malviya, the head of BJP’s information and technology department, tweeted about the two social media giants’ decision to suspend Trump’s account: “Deplatforming Donald Trump, a sitting US president, sets a dangerous precedent. It has less to do with his views and more to do with intolerance for a differing point. Ironically, those who claim to champion free speech are celebrating. Big tech firms are now ....
