now. it is 4:00 in new york. breaking news this hour. we are covering yet another mass shooting in this country. this one on the campus of the university of nevada las vegas this afternoon. it is still early, but minutes ago, police saidsuspect, now dead. as for victims, police say tre appear to betiple although how many exactly is still unknown. at least one of thes of the ooting, unlv s beam hall, the university s business school, mere yards from the student union. law enforcement is still asking people to avoid the area. joining us now, nbc news justice and intel correspondent, ken dilanian. former fbi agent, peter strzok and with me at the table, professor of politics and journalism at morgan state, jason johnson. ken, please fill in the gaps wherever possible. what do we know? well, about an hour ago, the university of nevada las vegas twitter account posted an alert that said university police were responding to a confirmed active shooter in beh, which stands for be
looking at background checks, making sure the folks don t get through. we think that the shooter here probably should have never had a weapon. he had a weapons violation. how did he acquire that weapon? there are loopholes when it comes to buying weapons. we have to close the loopholes. and 85 to 90% of the american people think that is what we should do and so we need to put it ton floor in the senate. i think we want to keep being aggressive in getting it on the floor, getting folks to vote and hope voters hold those folks accountable who are not taking the kind of actions to save lives. we know these bills will save lives. president biden has talked about doing something over and over again. we saw that bill last year. he has signed executive action, but gun safety groups have said to him, we want more. do you want to see more from president biden on executive orders, other actions that he can do from the oval office? it doesn t seem like things are going to move forward in congre
well. he knew, just like everybody in the republican party knew, it was an attempt at an attempted coup, which was not successful. and they have gotten away with it without any consequences, including, ayman, some of those very bloggers that are running on the ballot now in less than seven months. so my question again, where is the attorney general? the calendar with every passing day, with every passing week, is not on the side of the rule of law. who voters will start voting in these midterm elections by mid to late september, and if there is not anything in place, where we hope these folks accountable, tell the american people through public hearings or indictments, preferably, that reason was committed. i genuinely fear what the consequences of that, ayman. it s a very valid question. i think a lot of people in d.c. and around the country are watching merrick garland, and what he s doing right now, wondering where he is on the
