Awful thing to report that three people made it out alive and died in hospital. the last thing is that police are opening the possibility that there are more wounded people in nearby hospital who self reported, people who left and were wounded and took themselves to hospital. cal perry, thank you for that. i know you will let us know when you get anything else that might be new. thank you. with millions of americans traveling and gathering for the holiday, there s growing worry about a tripledemic. how can you and your family stay safe? joining me now, nbc s senior medical correspondent dr. john torres. the cdc just released its latest flu numbers. more than half of all states have high or very high levels of flu. is this an indicator of the tripledemic? i think it s an indicator that we are starting to get into that. we don t know when it s going to end. the numbers i can give you are what the cdc released. ....
Months old is eligible for an in influenza vaccine. flu numbers are still on the rise. we are concerned after holiday gathering, lots of people coming together we may see increases in the number of covid-19 cases as well. and it s all in a summary to say, do everything you can to prevent it by getting your vaccines. should parents of young kids try not to gather for thanksgiving? you know, we ve had a couple of really hard seasons and i do know that people are very interested in being together with family. but the important thing is if you are up to date with your vaccines, you have done the prevention things, if everybody is well, if people are not gathering when they are sick, wash your hands, improve your ventilation, wear a mask if people have symptoms or consider wearing a mask. considering wearing a mask ....
Out there, it is not enough. because people are still getting really sick. you know, 1300 people are still dying every day, you know, right now, on average. if you do the math that is over 400,000 deaths a year if those numbers crept up. yes, i think at some point the policies have to change and say, look. should a mild breakthrough case be treated the same as a severe breakthrough case? i think those conversations will happen. but i don t think we re there yet. is it fair to say you don t quarantine a workplace or school when the flu is spreading, which it does pretty much every winter. why do we need to quarantine when covid is spreading? is that fair? yeah. i think it s fair. it is the same sort of thing. what are we willing to tolerate as society? we pulled some flu numbers and can put those up. how many cases of flu, how many hospitalizations, how many deaths. well, look. in a given year flu can also kill 60,000 people a year. i feel like it is a difficult, uncomfortable conve ....
And we had gone from having fabulous numbers actually to, in my community, some of the worst in all of new york city. my husband is an i.c.u. doctor and he ll be heading in for another shift in a very crowded i.c.u. in hospitals that are now full. but remember, there is a lot of covid and the adult population is certainly still being hit harder by covid, but our pediatric hospitals certainly is seeing an increase in numbers as well, but we re also seeing all the other germs, so all the other winter stuff, flu numbers are starting to appear. respiratory virus, all the other stuff is back because of less physical distancing, less masking, more travel, more interaction. so covid still remains a problem, but we re hit with all the winter stuff as well. doctor, the cdc has now sort of changed its stance on boosters, taking less of, i don t know, sort of permissive sort of, if you feel like it stance, basically saying everyone should run out and get ....
Historically, looking at other countries and seeing what is happening here, maybe we ll get a little bit of a reprieve. i ll tell you quickly, the flu, people talk about the flu, like what are we willing to accept is the answer in terms of when this pandemic ends. those are flu numbers, john. up to 60,000 people die every year, millions of people get sick. hundreds of thousands of hospitalizations. we don t shut down the economy for that, i think it is going to be an uncomfortable conversation, but i think when we start to see numbers like that is when we say, hey, look, we re going to declare this thing at least in the rear view mirror if not over. i will say when things drop, it is a real opportunity as the numbers start go down, it is an opportunity to get your arms around it even more. so i hope people seize that moment and drive it down to those minuscule numbers. if we can. there is the university hospital in colorado, which said they re not going to do organ transplants for un ....
