Florida keeps piling people into prisons – and we continue to do so at a dizzying rate. How dizzying? According to a 2018 report by the nonpartisan Prison Policy Initiative, if Florida were a country, its incarceration rate would rank No. 14 in the world. In fact, our rate of 833 individuals per every 100,000 residents is higher than those of authoritarian regimes in Russia (413), Iran (284), Bahrain (234), Venezuela (173) and China (118). “We’re No. 14!” is never exactly an inspiring statement, but in this case it’s a pretty sad one. And here’s what makes it even sadder:
