According to the Ifo study, economic sanctions mainly affect poorer populations

Economic punitive measures against countries hit poor people in particular, according to the conclusion of Ifo experts. Life expectancy is also decreasing. It is questionable whether the findings can be transferred to Russia. With economic sanctions imposed by the UN, per capita economic output collapses sharply. With such measures by theUN, the life expectancy of the population is reduced by an average of 1.2 to 1.4 years, it said. The study is based on evaluations of 160 countries. Of these, 67 were affected by economic sanctions in the period from 1976 to 2012.

Economic sanctions impose high costs, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities

Economic sanctions, a commonly used tool in international diplomacy, inflict significant economic damage on target countries, with the poorest segments of their populations bearing the brunt of the consequences. Recent studies reveal that sanctions imposed by the United Nations result in an annual decline of 2 percentage points in the growth rate of sanctioned nations. Extrapolated over a decade, this amounts to a staggering 25 percent reduction in per capita economic output.
