Potentially disastrous flood manage the wake of the violent storms in the nation s midsection. the mississippi river town of west alton, missouri, with we are told is being evacuated. tom sader is joining me from the weather center, and showing the pictures there before the commercial break, there is trouble there. randi, i know the area well, and born and raised in st. louis, and some are saying, is this 1993? many may remember the massive flooding. if you is seen the city flag, it is red, but you have the three rivers coming together, and you have the merrimack river, and the missouri and the mississippi, but when you have a record eight inches of rain fall at lambert airport, you have trouble. we have flooding from southeast missouri to oklahoma and arkansas. this is evacuations orders now ....
Coming for the city of altonment when there is first flooding from around 33 feet on the flood stage, it is going to flood some of the areas, and mainly, a lot of of these are like the city parks, but now it is getting into the residential spots, and the city of alton, and many are being urged and in fact, mandatory e vvacuations taking place. the amount of rainfall is staggering, and it is not just areas of the deep south where the tornadoes raged across the areas of texas in through mississippi and alabama, but the heavy amounts of rain, and one storm system after another, and a stationary front, it did not move whatsoever, and the record rainfall from a arkansas and oklahoma to the missouri valley is causing this flooding. and they have made improvements from 1993, and however, with the flooding west of st. louis, you will get to the around a place called mid rivers, and this is interstate 70, and a major interstate that actually closed me for eastbound traffic from one lane to west ....
Vie. in downtownle is, the flooding will occur more on the illinois side. also, west of st. louis metro where the i-70 closure was back in 1993, the terrible flooding that is a 500-year flood, so they built up the levees quite a bit. it is heavily populated there, and areas out to the west, and not just i-70, but i-40 as well. a lot of the flooding there in the downtown area is across the river into illinois as well. this is going to be a problem for not just the next several hours, but the next couple of days as mentioned, because it will take a while for the water to make its way into the major tributaries. and first of all not only what it takes, but to where this water goes. it is going to go south, and most likely the crest will be making its way to ste. genevieve, and then jir rgirard and pa tu ka, and most likely the crest will continue to around the states of arkansas, ....
Charles kocounty emergency management office said that there is an official order for e evacuation there in west alton, and what kind of warning would the community have a had? well, this area, randi, they know what floods and what does not flood. they have seen it before. so many of these communities have seen it in the past. what they have not seen is the record-breaking rainfall to aggravate the situation. it happened so quickly over a couple of days, and now, of course, last-minute evacuations taking place, and many may have been prepared, and they know that when you get the record rainfall, there is flooding, but most likely some rescues now, as many are inundated in the home, and may have to get to the rooftop. we will find some first responders out after of the the record rain to help in areas of west alton and possibly other e areas no the south in the next 24 to 48 hours. anything, tom, they can do to ....
