One refreshing difference between local government and state government is that local government deals with problems on the ground and providing the services people depend on day-to-day while the Legislature and Congress are more interested in the Culture Wars, symbolic declarations and ideological positioning for use in the next campaign cycle. “There is no Democratic or Republican way to pick up garbage,” as legendary New York Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia famously observed about local governing.
