Water Wars: Flirting in the Taiwan Strait

This month saw some notable military activity in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait, continued diplomatic efforts by the United States and its partners to push back against China, and a renewed emphasis by the U.S. Navy on countering China’s growing naval power. Much of the analysis regarding the Indo-Asia Pacific in the past month focused on what the incoming Biden administration would mean for the region.

CAMP H.M. SMITH, HAWAII – The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) declined to participate in the virtual Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) Work Group and Flag Officer Plenary session with U.S. Indo-Pacific Command scheduled for Dec. 14-16, 2020.
The United States and People’s Republic of China (PRC) have met regularly since 1998 to conduct the MMCA dialogue as a consultation mechanism to strengthen military maritime safety, to improve operational safety in the air and sea, and reduce risk between our two militaries. The Department of Defense (DoD) and the PLA agreed to hold the 2020 MMCA meeting virtually due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. This exchange is an agreed-upon event in the U.S.-PRC 2020 defense engagement plan. ....

Sea Services: More Assertive Posture Against China Will Require Presence, Strong Alliances

The U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard say they need to begin acting more assertively to push back against gray-zone operations China is already conducting today. That means having more forward forces to deter, to document malign behaviors and to support partners as they protect their territory, according to service leaders.
