A former residential school near Lestock, Sask., about 107 kilometres northeast of Regina, is now a national historic site.
An effort led by the Muskowekwan First Nation saw the Muscowequan school the last standing residential school building in Saskatchewan become a national historic site on Thursday.
Constructed in 1930 and 1931, the school replaced buildings that were used as early as the late 1800s.
REGINA A former residential school, which is still standing on the Muskowekwan First Nation in Saskatchewan, has been named a national historic site by the federal government. The Muscowequan Indian Residential School, located on Muskowekwan First Nation, is the last standing residential school in Saskatchewan and was one of the last residential schools to close in Canada when it shut its doors in 1997. At least 35 unmarked graves have been found on the residential school grounds since the 1990s. The announcement was made by Jonathan Wilkinson, the federal minister responsible for Parks Canada, on Thursday. Muskowekwan First Nation worked with Parks Canada to share the stories of residential school survivors and “determine the historic values of the site.”

The vote for a new Assembly of First Nations National (AFN) Chief is headed to a second round of voting with no one garnering the 60% of votes required to win an election that is currently being led by one vote by former Muskowekwan First Nation Chief Reginald Bellerose with 91 votes followed by former Ontario Regional Chief RoseAnne Archibald with 90 votes.
