Just about every approach that can be imagined has been tried to revive the country in general and the church in particular in America…with very little to show for it. Most church growth gurus will tell you that the vast majority of churches experiencing growth are simply getting their members from other churches. There is a lot of shuffling going on but not a lot of brand new born-again believers. Consequently, there was the brilliant idea that church growth would explode if we’d “build it and they will come.” So church revitalization has given way to church planting. It sounds good, promising, and exciting until you find out that once again when the truth is finally revealed, all you’ve done is relocated members from one location to another. Religious Affections is a tremendous book. Itâs potentially a devastating book. The question it addresses â what are the distinguishing marks of one who is in favor with God? â is an unavoidable one for a follower of Christ. How do I know that my faith is genuine? How do I know that Iâm a
real Christian, and not a hypocrite?
The possibility that my faith is false, and the fact that this book might help to reveal the falsity, is why it is potentially devastating. But this sort of devastation is good. If my faith is misguided or lacking or deficient or false in some fundamental way, far better that I discover it now than that I arrive at the final judgment only to hear Jesus say, âI never knew you; depart from meâ (Matthew 7:23).
