Fire badly damages Dover, NH restaurant closed for renovations


Calls to one of the owners, Joe Scarlotto, were not immediately returned.
Hass said the first arriving engine, from Central Station, located right around the corner, was on scene in less than two minutes, finding heavy smoke coming from the rear of the building. The plate glass windows at the front of the restaurant were stained with smoke from the interior and extremely hot to the touch.
“Crews made their way through the front door, where they were met with a high heat, heavy smoke and fire,” he said.
The fire was knocked down with multiple hose lines, and crews spent the next hour searching for and extinguishing remaining pockets of fire in the ceiling and walls. ....

Power outages in Portsmouth, Dover; Eversource, Unitil working restore


Power outages, toppled utility poles and trees were reported around the Seacoast following as heavy winds hit the area overnight Monday and throughout Tuesday.
Winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph were in the forecast. Drivers were advised by utilities to look out for and avoid downed power lines.
In Portsmouth, residents took to Facebook early Tuesday morning to share images of a large tree fallen on Middle Street due to forceful wind gusts occurring across the region.
Resident Andrew Bagley posted that he and his family lost power around 7:30 a.m. after he “heard a pop” and walked outside to discover the tree snapped and blocking the road.  ....

Tri-Cities shelter serves 20-plus, expands hours in storm
SOMERSWORTH The Tri-Cities’ overnight warming center in Somersworth stayed open through the day Tuesday in order to help area houseless residents stay safe during a nor’easter that brought over 10 inches of snow and frigid wind gusts.
Dover Fire Chief Paul Haas said the cities decided to keep the 30 Willand Drive center open it normally only operates at night during cold-weather emergencies because most daytime resources where closed due to the storm.
“Our goal is to provide a safe place for these people to be,” said Haas.
The center has been activated multiple times this winter. The latest activation began the night of Jan. 28 and will continue until the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 3. ....

Strafford County Riverside Rest Home to get COVID vaccine in outbreak


“There’s 475 people eligible for the vaccine, that’s staff and residents,” he said.
Staff and residents will receive the first of two doses of the Pfizer vaccine at the 215-bed Riverside Rest Home, which has been dealing with a COVID outbreak, Bower said.
Bower, who has been recovering from COVID himself after testing positive, said he will “absolutely be the first in line” on Monday when CVS personnel arrive to administer the injections.
Strafford County’s Riverside Rest Home went 266 days without anyone testing positive for COVID, Bower said, “since then we’ve certainly had our share.”
He’s encouraged that the home’s residents and staff will have access to the vaccine even before the end of the year. ....
