New Haven Firefighter Dies Fighting Early Morning Blaze Written by Peter Carey
A New Haven Firefighter died earlier this morning while fighting a fire on Valley Ave in New Haven. City officials have identified the Firefighter as Ricardo Torres Jr.
Torres died fighting a blaze on Valley Street early Wednesday morning according to Fire Chief John Alston and a second firefighter identified as Lt. Samod “Nuke” Rankins was hospitalized in critical condition at Bridgeport Hospital. “We ask that the public keep them in their prayers,” Alston said.
Firefighters received multiple calls of a fire on Valley Street around 12:45 a.m. Allston said, upon arrival firefighters saw “heavy fire and flames.” Allston said firefighters rescued two residents who were trapped inside the home. One was treated on the scene and one person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

New Haven announced the opening of a vaccine clinic at 54 Meadow street Monday afternoon. City officials part of the Phase 1A helped christen the opening with vaccination of their own.

As cities and towns across Connecticut prepare to administer COVID-19 vaccinations, officials in New Haven will hold news conferences on Monday afternoon about plans for a multi-phase rollout and to launch the first phase.
At 2 p.m., New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker will join City Health Director Maritza Bond, Bysiewicz, New Haven Police Chief Otoniel Reyes and Fire Chief John Alston, Jr. to launch the first phase of a four-part mass COVID-19 immunization campaign in the city.
Elicker said the city received 1,000 doses of the Modena vaccine.
Bond, Alston and the New Haven Director of Public Health Nursing Jennifer Vazquez will be among the first responders and health care professionals receiving vaccinations at the news conference.
