The Riverhead Backyard ReLaps Ultra is the most brutal race in New Zealand, with entrants running till they drop, and only one person is left standing.
It’s a race with no end. Entrants have to keep running until they simply can’t go on, until they drop, until there’s only one person left standing. Mike White was at last weekend’s Riverhead Backyard ReLaps Ultra and watched heroics and heartbreak unfold in the most brutal race imaginable.

The final 10 were completed after he’d crossed the finish line on Sunday afternoon, launching into a set to the roar of the crowd who had gathered to watch the last finishers, and joined by event staff.
It was a remarkable scene to top off a weekend which had featured so much astonishing evidence of human endurance.
On Saturday, two women laid down a challenge by stomping a mark on their races.
Ruth Croft, a West Coaster who ranks among the best trail runners in the world and usually spends much of the year in Europe, was first home in the 102km race, beating all-comers in the journey from Kawerau to Rotorua. It was the first time a woman had claimed overall line-honours in the event. ....

Matt Urbanski has put
the disappointment of 2020 behind him to come out and win
the 100-Miler race at the Tarawera Ultramarathon, with Katie
Wright beating Fiona Hayvice by the narrowest of margins to
take home the women’s title.
Urbanski didn’t
finish the 2020 race on the trails around Rotorua but
overcame that disappointment to win the longest race at New
Zealand’s largest trail running event by more than an
hour.
Urbanski and his family are from America but
have been in New Zealand since last year after their flight ....

Almost 3,000 Runners Ready For Saturday's Tarawera Ultramarathon

Runners from across New Zealand will take to the trails
around Rotorua this weekend for the 13th edition of the
Tarawera Ultramarathon.
Approximately 3,000 runners
are preparing to take part in New Zealand’s largest trail
running event, with race distances of 21km, 50km, 102km or
100-Miles.
Race Director Sam Ellis said that the team
was looking forward to welcoming runners back to the region
this weekend.
“The Tarawera Ultramarathon is an
incredible community event that the Rotorua region has
embraced over the last 13 years and we can’t wait to see
almost 3,000 runners hit the trails this weekend,” said ....
